Watch your worker classifications!
Watch your worker classifications! Congress is likely to revisit the rules on worker classification, perhaps later this year, and consider a full or substantial rewrite. To increase federal tax compliance on employment taxes the IRS has a written "understanding" with over 20 state agencies that administer state employment and SUI rates. The IRS plans more audits of worker classifications, using its traditional 20-factor test. Also, the IRS plans more audits of S corps that appear to underpay shareholder/officers! Criminal investigations of potential employment tax abuse are up almost 40% from last year and criminal prosecutions will likely increase as much. Target: "zero-wage" schemes, in which employers pay employees in cash and don't withhold employment taxes. |

Vendor Payments, Customer Reimbursements & 1099's
A number of businesses face the following scenario: They want to post certain vendor expenses to a Cost of Goods Sold account. They want to bill customers for the expense, but QuickBooks does not permit marking an expense "billable" if the posting account is of the type COGS. Some of the vendor payments have to be tracked for 1099's. All of this works smoothly if you set up your company file to accommodate this scenario. This means creating an item you can use instead of posting the bill or check to an Expense account. The item is linked to the COGS account you want to use, and when you use the item you can mark the expense as billable to customers. |

5 Things You Should Know About Disciplinary Reports Before I went to law school, I was a bank manager. One of the most frustrating things I had to do was prepare disciplinary reports. I never knew what to say and, as a result, said either way too much or not enough. Today, when I do training or when I'm working on an employment law case, I deal with a lot of people who don't know how to write disciplinary reports and thus either write inadequate reports or don't prepare them at all. |

QuickBooks Scheduled Backups and the Windows Task Scheduler
Have you ever wondered how QuickBooks manages to schedule automatic backups without using the Windows Task Scheduler? Have you found that you can't see the QuickBooks backups when you open the Task Scheduler? Well, the answers is: QuickBooks does use the Task Scheduler, but configures the task as "hidden". To see the status of a scheduled backup in the Scheduled Tasks window, select the option "Show Hidden Tasks". In Windows XP the command is on the Advanced menu; in Windows Vista the command is on the View menu. |
